Sun City was built from scratch in Marinette, a ghost town. On January 1, 1960, there were just five model homes. Already the developer had built a recreation center and a golf course to give people an idea of what they were buying into.
When the community ran out of space, the developers decided to build another city. This one is known as Sun City West. By the 1990s, it was full, and they began building another community, Sun City Grand.
Del Webb who developed the original Sun City was so successful that he ended up on the cover of Time Magazine. Yet even he might be surprised to see just how many people live in the Sun City communities today.
According to the 2020 Census, today’s Sun City is home to more than 39,931 people. More than 23,100 houses and apartments are in the original development. Sun City West has more than 25,806 residents and 15,511 households. Sun City Grand has a population of about 14,874.

What to Do in Sun City
From day one, there have been things to do in Sun City. There are seven recreation centers in the main Sun City alone. The lawn bowling greens have been known to attract national tournaments.
Built in 1966, the Sun Bowl Amphitheater hosts concerts and many other events. There are also shows at the Palm Ridge Recreation Center (SC West) and Sagebrush Ballroom (SC Grand) among other venues.
Sun City offers golf at the historic North Course, the award-winning South Course, and more. Lakes East and Willowbrook are executive courses while Willowcreek provides more challenging 18-hole play. At the Lakes West Course, there are numerous water challenges.
In Sun City West, you’ll find regulation play at Trail Ridge, Grandview, Pebblebrook and Deer Valley. Executive golf courses include Stardust, Echo Mesa and Desert Trails. You’ll find Cimarron, Desert Valley, Granite Falls North, and Granite Falls South courses at Sun City Grand.
Located in Surprise, Sun City Stadium is the closest destination for spring training. The Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals and the rest of the Cactus League play games here in March and early April.
Scenic Drives Near Sun City
One reason people love this part of Arizona is the way it places you close to so many amazing vistas. The desert can be fascinating, especially when you can explore the totally wild areas of the Sonoran Preserve or White Tank Regional Mountain Park.
You can go further, cruising up I-17 until you divert onto the Red Rock Scenic Byway. From Sedona, you can head up and then down into the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon. You may even find a place to take a dip in the water.
If you want to see some of the most remarkable sites on earth, you can head to the Petrified Forest. The park’s scenic loop offers amazing views. You can also take in the Painted Desert. In a good car, the desert heat stays outside while you cruise comfortably.
