Buckeye

A Brief History of Buckeye

The first European-Americans to settle permanently in the area arrived in 1877. The Clanton family moved there from a small town in Iowa. In 1885, an Ohio native named Malie M Jackson proposed the Buckeye Canal. He named it for his home state's native tree.

At the time, the Hassayampa River was the only source of water, and it ran underground for part of the year.

Settler M.E. Clanton, and his friends bought the rights to the canal. His brother Thomas Newt Clanton was instrumental in building the first part of the canal.

The Buckeye Canal was critical to allowing the residents to grow alfalfa for their cattle. They also grew cash crops such as cotton.

In 1910, the community was renamed Buckeye after the canal. Just a few years later, the railroad was routed through, and the new railroad station was built. In 1926, Buckeye main street was incorporated into Route 80. This was an important corridor that stretched from San Diego on the west coast to Tybee Island, Georgia on the east coast.

In 1929 it was incorporated, but it didn’t grow much during the rest of the century. In 2000, the population was around 6,500. Despite its proximity to Phoenix, it wasn’t really a suburb.
